Groomed by a neighbour in his early teenage years, our client was subsequently sexually abused over a number of years, with psychological abuse continuing after the physical abuse ended. Around 20 years after the abuse started and the abuser was incarcerated, our client approached Wyatts for advice and to file a claim for damages.

Our client suffered a lifetime of torment after being groomed and sexually abused over a number of years by a neighbour, with the assaults gradually increasing in severity over time. While the physical abuse ended as our client got older, severe psychological abuse continued as the abuser remained in contact with our client, telling him of assaults being committed on other children.

The abuse suffered by our client led to a downward spiral. He had been a child who enjoyed school but was never able to complete his education after being expelled. His family life fell apart, and he was in and out of employment for many years. Nightmares, poor sleep, anger, anxiety and severe depression became the defining features of our client’s life.

Around 20 years after the abuse started, our client found the courage to report the assaults to police. An extensive investigation followed, and the neighbour was eventually arrested. He pleaded guilty to the assaults on our client, was incarcerated and may die in prison. At the same time, our client approached us to take on his claim for compensation.

Wyatts took on the case and immediately placed the abuser on notice of our client’s claim for damages. Soon after, we filed the claim in the Supreme Court of NSW. With no response from the abuser, we applied for a default judgment in favour of our client, securing a hearing date less than 12 months after our client approached us for help.

Careful preparation by the Wyatts team convinced the Court of the truly catastrophic injuries that our client suffered and that changed the course of his life forever. In what we believe at the time was a record judgment for a sexual abuse case in NSW, our client was awarded damages of over $3.5million plus legal costs.
